Privacy & scan data
How martian probes observe the grid, what we keep, and how land owners can withdraw a sector from recon.
Collection
What we scan
Happening in Second Life visits public Second Life locations with automated scout avatars. During a visit we record aggregate activity signals: avatar counts, attachment names visible on nearby avatars (for trending item rankings), parcel positions, region maturity settings, and timing metadata. We do not publish individual avatar profiles on the public site.
Retention
Avatar data TTL
Ephemeral avatar identifiers and attachment sightings used for scoring are pruned on a rolling schedule (typically within days, not years). Aggregated region statistics may be kept longer for trend charts. Exact retention is tuned for operational needs and may change as the fleet scales.
Disclosure
Automated scouts (bots)
Our in-world scouts are scripted agents — they teleport, scan, and relay data back to this site. A full bot disclosure page is forthcoming; for now, scout avatars identify as part of the Happening in Second Life fleet and respond to IMs when staffed.
Regions that set Linden Lab's deny_bots flag are skipped automatically when the simulator enforces that restriction.
Land owners
60-day region opt-out
If you own or manage a region and do not want it included in public scan rankings or detail pages, you may request a 60-day opt-out. Verification requires an in-world OTP, delivery of a Land Guardian object, and confirmation on your land. Staff may review edge cases.
Opted-out locations show a minimal stub on the site — no charts, avatars, or activity history — until the opt-out expires or is renewed.

GridScanner operates under Linden Lab's Scripted Agent Policy. Scouts are labeled, rate-limited, and honor simulator bot restrictions. Report abuse through the contact above.
